Detailed
Description
Commentary on Massekhet Kallah Rabbati by R. Abraham ben Nathan ha-Yarhi (c. 1155–1215). This tractate is one of the minor tractates appended to the end of the fourth order, Nezikin, in the printed texts of the Babylonian Talmud. Ha-Yarhi’s commentary, on the first chapter of the tractate – all that is known to exist - is based on a manuscript found in Meknes, Morocco, in 1725. It has corrections and references from R. Baruch Toledano, who was responsible for bringing the book to press. The volume begins with an introduction by R. Toledano, in square letters, followed by the text in rabbinic type. The text is accompanied, at the bottom of the page, by R. Toledano’s annotations. Tiberias imprints are very rare.

Ha-Yarhi, a Talmudic scholar from Provence, is best known for his Sefer ha-Manhig on laws and customs. He was born in Avignon, Provence, studied under R. Abraham ben David of Posquieres (Ravad), R. Isaac ben Abba Mari, and several of the Ba’alei Tosafot. Ha-Yarhi left home at an early age, seemingly to attend the distinguished yeshivot in France, particularly that of R. Isaac ben Samuel of Dampierre (RI, R. Isaac ha-Zaken). During this time he experienced considerable deprivation and hardship. Ha-Yarhi, whose itinerary also included Germany, eventually reached Toledo, where he eventually settled and became a member of that city’s rabbinical court.
