Description		    Polemic against Schlesinger heretics by R. Akiva Joseph Schlesinger, with glosses from his son-in-law, R. Mordedcai Moses Heiken. The title page states that it is to instruct the children [of Israel] in the use of the inkwell against heretics (disbelievers), in order to defend and give refuge against freethinkers, to know the Lord, God of the Hebrews, who seek Zion and build Jerusalem. With words that come from the Hebrew heart. There is an introduction and approbation form R. Schlesinger and an introductory essay. The text is in the form of a debate between an inquirer (researcher) and a sage.

R. Akiva Joseph Schlesinger (1837–1922) was a graduate of Hungarian yeshivot and a student of Kabbalah. He belonged to the school of thought, following R. Moses Sofer (Hatam Sofer), which advocated complete separation from “enlightened” and “neologic” elements. In his book Lev Ivri (1865), he sharply attacks innovators and reformers. R. Schlesinger was among the first visionaries of modern Zionism and in 1870 went to Erez Israel out of a conviction that the sole hope for religious Jewry lay in the establishment of a religious Jewish community in the Land of Israel. In 1873, R. Schlesinger published Hevrat Mahzirei Atarah le-Yoshnah or Kolel ha-Ivrim, in which he expounds his plan for the establishment of a world-wide association for the consolidation of religious Jewry. R. Schlesinger was the leader of a group of Jerusalemites who tried to change the halukkah system and divert the funds to agricultural settlement. As a result he was boycotted and persecuted, to which he reponded with harsh polemic. In 1878, R. Schlesinger helped found Petah Tikvah. With the establishment of the new settlement, he called on religious Jewry to establish their own settlement movement to encompass truly religious Jews, without “heretical and outside elements.”
