Detailed
Description
Exchange of letters and telegrams between David Ben-Gurion and Elijah Golomb concerning the defense of the Jewish community in Palestine. In the introduction the editor states that the newspapers, without exception, have blurred the communications between the leader of the left, Ben-Gurion, and Golomb, concerning accords on the security of the Jews in Israel, which appeared in two editions of ha-Yarden. He is therefore making these exchanges, as much as possible, available. An important document concerning the formative years of the State of Israel.

David Ben-Gurion (1886–1973) was the first prime minister and defense minister of Israel. He was also a leader of the pioneering labor movement in Erez Israel, and he headed the struggle for Jewish independence in Palestine. Ben-Gurion was a founder of Histadrut which he dominated from the early 1920’s. He also served as that organization’s representative in the World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency, and was elected chairman of both organizations in 1935. In May, 1948, with the establishment of the State of Israel, Ben-Gurion became both Prime Minister and Defense Minister. In late 1953, Ben-Gurion retired, only to return to political life after the Knesset elections in 1955, assuming the post of Defense Minister and later the premiership.

Elijah Golomb (1893–1945) was the leader of Jewish defenses in Palestine and one of the main architects of the Haganah. During the Arab riots of 1936–39 Golomb was one of the initiators of the field units (pelugot sadeh) that went out to confront Arab terrorists in combat. He was among the founders and builders of the Palmah and prepared the Haganah for the future struggle of the Jewish people in Palestine. Golomb was active in Erez Israel public life, as a leader of Ahdut ha-Avodah (later of Mapai), and of the Histadrut; and was a member of the Va’ad Le’ummi, as well as a delegate to Zionist congresses.
