Detailed
Description
Iggeret Rishfei Keshet is a biographical work is which R. Moses Koerner recounts his wanderings and tribulations, including a rebuttal of his detractors. The text of the title page begins by stating that he will relate in a clear Hebrew his tribulations in the year Rishfei רשפי (1831); reflecting the title which is taken from, “There he broke the flashing arrows (Rishfei Keshet), the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah” (Psalms 76:4), and continues, a tractate of envy of the arrogant. “‘For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me’ (Psalms 109:2), and ‘Bands of wicked men’ (119:62) ‘who intend to trip up my feet’ (Psalms 140:5) ‘But I will hope continually, and will yet praise you more’ (Psalms 14:14) with all the prayers of Moses, ‘Save me!’ (Genesis 32:12). The title page is dated “’But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises’ (Psalms 75:10) of His kindness” ואני אגיד לעולם אזמרה חסדו (592=1831/32). At the end of the volume are letters of support he received from various rabbis.

R. Moses ben Eliezer Phoebus Koerner (1766–1836) served as rabbi at Rendsburg (Schleswig), Shklov, and Grodno. In his later years he traveled extensively in Europe soliciting aid for the publication of his works. Koerner subsequently settled in Breslau where he died. His published works are: Torat Moshe (Nowy Dwor, 1786) containing homilies on obscure passages in Bible and Midrash, and also novellae, partly by Zevi Hirsch b. Abraham, of Posen; Zera Kodesh (Berlin, 1798), a commentary on the Sifra with homiletic discourses; Ke-Or Nogah (Breslau, 1816), an attempt to synthesize Kabbalah and Jewish philosophy, the Zohar and Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed; Megillat Eivah (Breslau, 1837), the autobiography of his ancestor Yom Tov Lipmann Heller, with Koerner’s notes and a German translation by Miro; and Birkat Moshe (Berlin, 1834).
