Richard Cumberland (February 19, 1732 - May 7, 1811) was an English dramatist and civil servant. Cumberland's numerous literary productions are spread over the whole of his long life. His life time production of plays, published and unpublished, have been computed to amount to fifty-four. About 35 of these are regular plays, to which have been added 4 operas and a farce; and about half of the whole list are comedies. Cumberland's stage life are highlights in his distinguished career as a dramatist and proof of his staying power as a major force in English letters.
