The author, R’ Avraham Ha'Kohen Katz born in Lask, Poland, was known as a holy person who practiced seclusion and self-afflictions. He moved to Jerusalem through Furth were he remained for several years, and from Jerusalem traveled as an emissary to Germany, Poland and practically the whole of Europe. In Nice, France, he spent four years at the home of the philanthropist R’ Yaakov Treves, and in appreciation named this work Beit Yaakov after him. Later whilst in Tunis he authored this work in only two weeks! Finally he returned to Jerusalem through Europe. A short while later he was taken as a hostage for the city’s Jews and died a martyr’s death through terrible suffering. In his approbation, R’ Yosef Te’umim author of “Pri Megadim,” writes: A holy man, Jerusalem emissary of the merciful One etc., has passed by us. R’ Saul Nathanson writes (in his approbation to the work Ein Panim on the Torah, Lemberg 1864) that the author fasted for forty years from Sabbath to Sabbath, and whilst in Berlin the greatest physicians checked him to discover his means of survival!

המחבר ר' אברהם הכהן כ"ץ נולד בלאסק שבפולין, נודע כאיש קדוש והתנהג בפרישות ובסיגופים. הוא עלה לירושלים דרך פיורדא שבה התגורר שנים אחדות, ומירושלים יצא בשליחות לאשכנז ופולניה ועבר למעשה בכל ארצות אירופה. בניצא שבצרפת שהה ארבע שנים בבית הגביר ר' יעקב טריויש וכאות תודה קרא לספר שלפנינו "בית יעקב" על שמו. אח"כ שהה בתוניס שם כתב את הספר שלפנינו במשך שבועיים ימים בלבד! לבסוף שב לירושלים דרך אירופה. זמן קצר אחרי ששב לירושלים נלקח ע"י הטורקים כבן ערובה עבור יהודי העיר ונהרג עקה"ש תוך יסורים קשים. ר' יוסף תאומים, בעל ה"פרי מגדים" כותב בהסכמתו: עבר עלינו איש קדוש שליחא דרחמנא מירושלים וכו'. ר' שאול נתנזון כותב עליו (בהסכמה לספר עין פנים לתורה, לבוב תרכ"ד) שהוא ישב בתענית ארבעים שנה משבת לשבת. ומסופר שכשהיה בברלין עקבו אחריו גדולי הרופאים כיצד הוא חי!
