There are several approbations, an introduction, errata, and the text, in two columns, with the mitzvot in square unvocalized Hebrew in the middle, the Hebrew text in rabbinic letters in the inner column, the Yiddish translation in Vaybertaytsh in the outer column. The text includes entries from the Hassagot of Nahmanides (Ramban) who is critical of this work. The first part, on the negative commandments, concludes with the shir on the mitzvot lo-ta’aseh by R. Solomon ben Gabriel. The second part also concludes with shir by R. Solomon ben Gabriel. Folios 42b-45a ia a letter from R. Hisdai ben Isaac to King Alacsar and a response from Joseph, King of Torgami.

Rambam wrote Sefer ha-Mitzvot because he found previous attempts at enumerating the traditional 613 commandments unsatisfactory. Here he gives his enumeration of the 248 positive and the 365 negative commandments. Rambam was severely critical of the enumerations of the Halakhot Gedolot and of R. Hefez, as well as paytanim like R. Solomon ibn Gabirol, who composed Azharot based on an enumeration of the commandments. Maimonides’ sharp criticism of the Halakhot Gedolot evoked a defense of the latter by Nahmanides in his Hassagot. The Sefer ha-Mitzvot, however, has been widely accepted, and a whole body of literature exists in defense of it. The Sefer ha-Mitzvot, originally written in Arabic, was translated several times into Hebrew and here, perhaps, for the first time, into Yiddish.

The translation is by R. Israel ben Ezekiel Landau (1713–1793), son of the (Noda bi-Yehudah), “into the language of the masses,” intended to strengthen their adherence to tradition.
