Description

Mikra’ot Gedolot (Biblia Rabbinica) with standard commentaries and the additional commentary of R. Solomon Zalman Netter on Ibn Ezra. This edition is particularly noteworthy for several features, beginning with its elaborate copperplate title pages printed in sepia at the beginning of each volume. At the top of the title page are representations of Moses and Aaron with the luhot between them. Below the text, which states the biblical book and commentaries included, are six detailed vignettes, one from each of the five books of the Torah; they are depictions of the Akeda, Moses receiving the Ten Commandments, Nadab and Abihu being consumed by fire; Moses hitting the rock, and Joshua being blessed by Moses. Other features are, in addition to the standard commentaries in the Rabbinic Bible, the commentary of R. Netter, this being the first edition of that important supercommentary on the Ibn Ezra. R. Netter’s commentary, built upon the work of earlier exegetes, is detailed and comprehensive. Physically, this edition is printed on large, fine paper with clear, easily readable fonts.

Genesis begins with the introductions of the Ibn Ezra and R. Netter, followed by the introductions from the authors of the other commentaries and a word to the reader from R. Netter. Haftorot are at the end of the volume. Exodus has an approbation from R. Eliezer ha-Levi Horowitz (1803-68), rabbi of Vienna, at the beginning and concludes with Minhat Shai, Megillat Esther, and Targum Sheni. Leviticus begins with the Kavvanot ha-Torah of R. Obadia Sforno and has Shir ha-Shirim at the end. The other books of the Pentateuch are similarly organized. This is a large and especially attractive Mikra’ot Gedolot.
