Large broadsheet announcing the time and place, Sunday, 5 Tevet [5700] (December 17, 1939), 4:00 P. M., for eulogies (hespedim) over the bitter loss of the teachers of Israel, gaonei ha-dor, Roshei yeshivot, the pillars of Torah and awe, for R. Simeon Judah Shkop, R. Baruch David Libowitz, R. Isaac Zelig Morgenstern, and R. Zevi Aryeh Fromer, for the entire house of Israel, the people of HaShem, fallen by the sword. The eulogies are to be delivered by R. Zevi Pesah Frank, R. Isser Zalman Meltzer, R. Jacob Moses Harlap, R. Jacob Kalman, and R. Joseph Gershon Horowitz. The broadsheet concludes that after the eulogies the assembly will pray for mercy (as stated in the Yehi Razon recited after reading the Torah on weekdays when Tahnun is recited) for our brothers, bnei Yisrael, who are in distress and captivity, in the land of the enemies, in Poland. It concludes movingly with the prayer, and the Lord should give ear and say enough to our afflictions, and “destroy death for ever” (Isaiah 25:8) and a redeemer should come to Zion speedily in our day, Amen.
The rabbis for whom the eulogies are being offered for were leading rabbis and Rosh Yeshivot in Europe, murdered by the Nazis. The Rabbis delivering the eulogies were leading rabbis in Erez Israel.
