Description		    Hassidic commentary on the Torah and festivals by R. Aaron of Zhitomir. The title and most of the text pages are printed on a light bluish paper. The title page informs that Toledot Aharon was brought to press by R. Mordecai Aryeh Leib, son-in-law of the author; it is dated, with a chronogram derived from, “and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi had budded” (Numbers 17:23). There are approbations from some of the greatest names in Hassidut, R. Abraham Joshua Heschel of Apts, R. Israel Levi of Berdichev, and R. Mordecai ben Menahem Nahum Twersky of Chernobyl. The introduction is from Berdichev. In his commentary R. Aaron emphasizes “morality and pursuit of the service of God,” with particular emphasis on devekut or adhesion to God. He stresses that true understanding of God can only be arrived at through Torah study. A person must strive constantly to improve by overcoming negative and egoistic tendencies. These homilies on the parashiyyot were recorded by his pupil R. Levi of Zhitomir R. Aaron of Zhitomir (d. 1817), was a student of the famed R. Levi of Berdichev. He was a fiery itinerant hasidic preacher in Zhitomir and other communities in Russia, bringing many adherents to hasidut. R. Aaron succeeded R. Levi of Zhitomir as preacher, after the latter’s death, remaining in Zhitomir for three years, afterwards traveling as far as Hungary and also spending time in other places, such as Nqagykaroly.
