Immensely popular introductory set of Hebrew text books with original covers. Although both volumes are described as part two, these turn of the century volumes are quite different. The earlier of the two, copyrighted 1905, has an attractive cover of Jews working the land. The front endpaper and first leaf have an advertisement for M. B. Shneider’s Bet ha-Sefer for 35 cents. The title page states the purpose of the work is to teach the Jewish child to read and write in the Hebrew language according to the syllables of the letters with drawings and pictures. On the verso of the title page is a note to the reader on pronunciation, followed by a picture of a hand writing and below it examples of how letters are to be written. Next is the alphabet, and from page seven, the text. The text begins with pronunciation of letters, moving on to words, paragraphs, concluding with more difficult reading assignments. Except for a number of the last pages there are numerous illustrations, with, from pages 53-61, six to a page. The accompanying illustrations are not only appropriate to the subject matter, but attractive and, as an educational aide, clever. The volume conclude with an advertisement, partially covered by the ex libre of R. Bienenfeld of New York. The back cover, in English, gives the price, 25 cents. Although described as part two it appears to be an introductory volume.
The second volume, with a picture of a child learning on the cover, has the name Jesse Bienenfeld written in the upper left hand corner. The cover is dated 1909. The ex libre of R. Bienenfeld appears over an advertisement for this book on the end paper. There is an advertisement for Bet ha-Sefer, now 50 cents. The text begins on page one, with a picture of a boy in uniform. The text is more advanced than in the other volume and there are fewer illustrations. Several of the illustrations are, however, almost full page, for example Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (p. 74) and Moses on Mount Sinai (p. 98). This volume has conjugation of verbs and the advanced text deals with Jewish holidays and biblical stories. There is a table of contents (p. 100). This volume is priced at 15 cents.
