Commentary on Pirkei Avot by R. Benjamin ben Joseph Feilbogen. The title page references R. Feilbogen’s father, Joseph בי"ח, for whom the book is named, and informs that the author was rav of Jeshurun in the community of Great Meseritz. There is a dedication page, to R. Isaac Leib Hamburger, the author’s father-in-law, and a preface from R. Feilbogen where he discusses his father and also makes mention of R. Joshua Kahan. The commentary on Avot is written in a straightforward manner, frequently referencing the commentary of Tosefot Yom Tov (Yom Tov Lipmann Heller, 1579–1654).
R. Benjamin Feilbogen was rav of Jeshurun in the community of Great Meseritz as was his father before him. His father, R. Joseph Feilbogen (1784-69), was an Austrian rabbi. He officiated as rabbi successively at Piesling, Pirnitz, Kanitz, Great Meseritz and Holleschau. He was considered one of the keenest Talmudists of Moravia, was a great pilpulist, and wrote many novellæ on various Talmudic treatises. While at Great Meseritz he was the teacher of R. Isaac Hirsch Weiss, the author of Dor Dor ve-Dorshaw.
