Leaf with two related printed letters, one to a side. The first letter is from R. Shalom Eliezer Halberstam to R. Aaron Zevi Gross responding that he has received R. Gross’s letter, but that it is not his way to give approbations, particularly when he sees that there are already approbations from eminent rabbis. However, when R. Gross’s book is published R. Halberstam will be pleased to purchase a copy, paying the fixed price. In the second letter, from R. Gross to R. Halberstam of Zanz concering R. Gross’s book, Cal de-Amar Rahmana, a commentary on sayings in the Talmud beginning with the word col, attractively bound and well printed on good paper. R. Gross quotes a price, 3-4 P., and states that if that is not satisfactory, to give it to someone else who might want it, and if not that, to please return the book.
R. Shalom Eliezer Halberstam of Ujfeherto (1862-1944) was born on Hol ha-Mo’ed Pesah when his father, R. Hayyim of Zanz, was sixty-five years old. R. Hayyim died when R. Shalom was fourteen, and he was afterwards brought up by his brothers. In 1898, he succeeded R. Naftalio Hirtzke Zilberman as rabbi of Ujfeherto. His Friday night tish did not conclude until dawn. He would tell hassidic tales in accordance with the custom of Zanz. One of his sons, R. Hayyim, was dayyan in Satmer, the other, R. Meshullam Zusya, dyyan in Ujfeherto. R. Shalom Eliezer Halberstam and his son, R. Meshullam Zusya, dressed in kittels, were murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz.
R. Gross’s book, Cal de-Amar Rahmana, was published in three parts in Budapest from 1932 to 1941.
