Detailed
Description
Three illustrations of the famous “New Synagogue” on Oranienburger Strasse in Berlin, at its inauguration in 1866. The great and beautiful synagogue was built over a period of six years. It was named the New Synagogue, and its building is very large and impressive and it remains the largest synagogue in Germany until today. The building is 50 meters high topped with an enormous golden dome, and it sat 3000 people. Because of its vicinity to residential buildings and the resourcefulness of a local policeman, the synagogue was not destroyed on Kristallnacht, 1938. However, during the allied bombing in 1943 it was severely damaged. Partial restoration of the building began in 1988 and was completed by 1995. Today the building is primarily used as a museum. Included in the lot is a book on the history of the synagogue, published upon the rededication in 1995.
