Detailed
Description
On the subject of duress in Jewish law by R. Hayyim ben Shabbetai, with the commentary Moda’ah Rabbah by R. Jeremiah ben Isaac, Av Bet Din Mattersdorf, and Moda’ah Zuta by his son R. Joab ben Jeremiah. There is an approbation from R. Zevi Hirsch Rosanes, Av Bet Din, Lemberg, followed by an introduction from R. Isaac of Kralu and R. Isaac the son-in-law of the Moda’ah Rabbah. The text of Moda’ah re-ha-Ones is in square letters centered in the middle of the page, with the commentaries on the sides in rabbinic letters. Moda’ah re-ha-Ones was originally written as the introduction to part two of R. Hayyim’s responsa, Torat Hayyim (3 parts, Salonika, 1713, 1715, 1722), but has been published separately, here with commentaries.

R. Hayyim (ben) Shabbetai (Maharhash, c.1555–1647), served as rabbi in Salonika. He studied under R. Aaron Sason, and subsequently became head of the yeshivah of the "Shalom" community. His pupils include R. Solomon ha-Levi,R. Isaac Barki, R. Hasdai ha-Kohen Perahyah, and R. David Conforte. R. Hayyim Shabbetai served as chief rabb of Salonika from at least 1640, but was referred to as "the great rabbi" as early as 1622. He devoted himself assiduously to congregational matters, introducing many important regulations, and was regarded as the outstanding halakhic authority of his time, questions being addressed to him from communities near and far. He wrote novellae on the tractate Ta'anit and on the last chapter of tractate Yoma, published in the Torat Moshe of his son Moses (Salonika, 1797); responsa on Even ha-Ezer (Salonika, 1651); and Torat ha-Zevah, on the laws of slaughtering and inspection and Seder Gittin (unpublished). R. Jeremiah Ben Isaac (d. 1805), Hungarian rabbi. Jeremiah studied under R. Meir ben Isaac Eisenstadt and served as rabbi of Mattersdorf (Burgenland) from 1770, and of Abaujszanto (Hungary), from about 1797. He lived for some time in Aszod (Hungary) but is not known to have held office there. He took a prominent part in 1798 in the dispute over whether the sturgeon, from which caviar is obtained, is permitted according to the dietary laws, a dispute which in its time engaged the rabbinic world. He declared it to belong to the "unclean" fish in opposition to the view of R. Aaron Chorin, his disciple, who declared it permitted. R. Joab Ben Jeremiah (d. 1810) was appointed, due to efforts of R. Aaron Chorin, rabbi of that Nemetkeresztur-Deutschkreutz; he was subsequently appointed rabbi of Hunsdorf (Huncovce-Hunfalu) and on the death of his father in 1806 was appointed his successor in Santov. He was one of the outstanding talmudists of his time and was eulogized as a great scholar and saint by Moses Sofer. His works, in addition Moda’ah Zuta are Sha'arei Binah, on the Sha'arei Shevu'ot of Isaac ben Reuben al-Bargeloni; Hen Tov ve-Zeved Tov (Zolkiew, 1806), on chapter 17 of the Shulhan Arukh Even ha-Ezer; and Imrei No'am.

Judith Rosanes, the printer of this and many other volumes, was a well-known personality, the wife of R. Zvi Hirsch Rosanes, the rabbi of Lemberg.
