Description		    First Ladino edition. 22, 176, 198 ff., 180:137 mm., usual light age and damp staining, lacks ff. 177-178. A good copy bound in modern half cloth and marbled paper boards.

Description		    R. Phinehas Elijah Hurwitz (1765–1821), was born in Lvov, Hurwitz wandered through Poland, Hungary, Germany, and England. He gained extensive secular knowledge without even knowing a single European language (it seems that a friend acted as translator), and wrote Sefer ha-Berit (1797), the first part of which was an anthology of the sciences, while the second half dealt with metaphysical questions. Sefer ha-Berit went into many editions since it was a source of basic scientific information for Jews who knew no European languages. The author condemned the fact that Jews engaged only in study and commerce which could not provide them with the proper livelihood and which exposed them to anti-Semitism and urged that they turn to manual labor.

The first edition (Brunn 1797) was published without the Author's name. He writes "if the Al-mighty returns my eyesight I will publish it with my name" - he did so in the second edition.

"ספר הברית", מתורגם ללאדינו. בהוצאה הנוכחית נדפס רק החלק הראשון של החיבור, בשני כרכים. בטופס שלפנינו אין שער לכרך ב, ולא ברור אם כך יצא לאור. לפי דברי ר' רפאל בנבנישתי בהקדמה של הוצאת [שלוניקי] תרמ"א, המתרגם הוא ר' אברהם בן בנבנישתי גאטינייו בעל ספר "צל הכסף". בשולי השער: "ע"י הפועלים... שבתי אלאלוף והר' יצחק ג'אחון". דף קע,ב: התנצלות המתרגם על שחילק את החלק הראשון לשני כרכים, למרות שהמחבר בהקדמתו השניה מזהיר שאין לעשות כן. דף קעא,א: המתרגם מודיע שעד סוף פרק יא דילג על ענייני הקבלה, אך לאחר שראה את אזהרת המחבר בהקדמתו השניה החל להדפיס עניינים אלה בעברית, כבמקור. דף קעא-קעה,א: השלמות של העניינים הקבליים שנשמטו (עד פרק יא). דף קעה עד הסוף: השלמות והוספות מתוך הוצאת ברין תקס"ז. בדף קעה,א מודיע המתרגם שעד דף מד עשה שימוש בהוצאת ברין תקנ"ז (ההוצאה הראשונה).
