Detailed
Description
First edition of a popular Hebrew-Yiddish medical work providing advice on how to keep children healthy by Dr. Moses Studencki. The front matter consists of a title page with a Hebrew heading and text in German, that identifies Dr. Studencki as a first class physician and obstetrician. There is a letter favoring ther book in Polish from a Polish medical committee A second title page, entirely in Hebrew, describes Rofei ha-Yeladim as good and faithful advice to protect a child’s health and prevent illnesses. Furthermore, if an illness does occur, how to recognize and identify it and what cures and home remedies are efficacious. Also which illnesses necessitate calling a physician. The verso of this page has a brief prayer followed by an index (one page lacking), a dedication page, a letter (approbation) from R. Hayyim Davidson, and then the text. The text begins with an autobiography of the author (pp. 1-2) who informs that he was born in Galicia, studied in yeshivah at Brodi and at the age of 17 came to Warsaw to study medicine. Dr. Studencki completed his studies in an academy in Berlin, becoming a doctor in 1834. There is an introduction/forward (pp. 3-4). The body of Rofei ha-Yeladim is in alternating Hebrew Yiddish pages comprising 276 numbered paragraphs in both languages. The final otherwise blank page has a decorative tail-piece.
