Detailed Description |
|
R. Joseph Baruch b. Jedidiah Zechariah Urbina, lived in the seventeenth century. Rabbi and physician in Venice, Rovigo, Modena, Mantua and Bussetto. A pupil of R. Judah Aryeh of Modena, who awarded him the title of "Haver" and later the title of Rabbi. His father held rabbinical office in Urbino. His wife, Judith, was the daughter of Rabbi Nathaniel Trabot, and in honour of their marriage the bridegroom composed a-poem (1625) that was printed in a collection of his poems "Mizmor Shir Jediduth Uvenoth Hashir". The community of Mantua invited -him in 1633 to come from Rovigo to serve as the doctor of the poor of the community. He translated the letters of the mathematician Alessandro Piccolomini into Hebrew, and perhaps other works as well. He also wrote rules of ritual slaughter, and replied to those who asked questions on matters of Halacha. One of his letters in Italian has been preserved.
