R. Menahem Mendel of Kosow (c. 1768-1825), founder of the Kosow Chassidic dynasty was the son of the famous and pious, R. Jacob Koppel Chassid (d. 1787) , a student of the founder of the Chassidic movement, the Ba'al Shem Tov. His personality is surrounded by a halo of legends and good deeds. His second son, R. Menachem Mendel was born in 1768 or 1769, and as a youth distinguished himself by his great knowledge of the Talmud. He married Scheine Rachel, the daughter of a wealthy Jew, R. Simel of Kosow. When his father-in-law passed on in 1786, he opened a small store in Kolomea to feed his family. He later moved to Kosow where he devoted all his time to the study of the Kabbalah. He studied with R. Zev Wolf of Tschorna-Ostra, R. Zwi Hirsch of Nadworna and R. Jechiel Michl of Zloczow.
The descendants of R. Jacob Koppel Hasid (d. 1787) served as rabbis of Kosow for 150 years: his son R. Menahem Mendel between 1790 and 1827; his son R. Hayyim, until 1854; R. Jacob Samson until 1880; his son R. Moses, until 1925; and R. Hayyim, who perished in the Holocaust in 1942.
