R. Jacob Ben-Zion b. Menahem Mendelson ha-Kohen (1875-1941) was born on the first day of Sukkoth in Kreuzburg, Latvia. He excelled in Russian Yeshivot and was appointed Chief Rabbi of Leeds in 1900, to Gateshead and in 1906 to Glasgow, Scotland. In 1915 he immigrated to the United States where he was appointed Chief Rabbi of Newark and served until his passing. His erudite scholarship can be seen in the numerous scholarly works he authored.
