Detailed
Description
Histoire de l’enfant prodigue (History of the prodigal son) by Jean Duplessi-Bertaux (1750-1818) in French. There are half and full title-pages, the latter describing the work as containing twelve tableaux drawn and engraved by Jean Duplessi-Bertaux. Each tableaux (engraving) is accompanied by several pages of text. The engravings are detailed and attractive, but relatively small, measuring about 60x85 mm. The subject matter is a recounting of the tale of the prodigal son, which is based on the Christian Bible. The format followed is the engraving with explanatory text, followed by several pages of more detailed explanations. In the engravings individuals where contemporary (18th century) clothing. Scenes range form bucolic to festive meals.

Jean Duplessi-Bertaux was a famous artist and his works are well known. Histoire de l’enfant prodigue, however, appears to be very rare, as a search of library catalogues did not locate copies in any major American or European libraries or in listings of major book dealers, although it is listed in the British Union Catalog (COPAC).
