Work on salting, Hallah, Niddah, and candle lighting by Ber Frank. The title page, as is the text of the book is primarily in Yiddish. It informs that Frank has made use of the Talmud and Midrashim in preparation of this work. Also, that Ber Frank is a shamash, shohet, and bodek in Pressburg. The title page has, in a more modern hand in blue ink, an owner’s signature, Y. Kaplan, dated Rosh Hodesh Nissan 720 (1960).There is an approbation from R. Moses Sofer (Hatam Sofer, 1762–1839), who gives his location as Frankfort a. Main. In the approbation Hatam Sofer speaks in complimentary terms about both Frank and this work. There is an introduction in Hebrew from R. Issachar Dov of the house of Levi. The text follows, set in a single column in Vaybertaytsh, excepting headings and key terms.
Salting, Hallah (the taking of a portion of bread for an offering), Niddah (the monthly menstrual separation), and candle lighting (Friday evening lighting of Sabbath candles), are not disparate subjects. They share a common theme of being mitzvot belonging to women, particularly the last three. The source for the mitzvot of Hallah, Niddah, and candle lighting is Shabbat 31a, which states “For three transgressions woman die in childbirth. Because they are not observant [of the laws] of Niddah, Hallah, and lighting of Sabbath candles.” |
