Detailed
Description
Comprehensive liturgical work prepared by Moses Praeger. The prayer book, the first book printed in Mannheim, is in two parts. One part reads from right to left, the other from left to right. The text of the title page of the former, excepting the title, is in German, stating, that it is for public and domestic devotion (öffentliche und häusliche andacht) for the Jewish community in Mannheim. There is a forward, contents, and errata (sinnstörende druckfehler). After is the liturgy in facing Hebrew and German pages for daily and Shabbat prayers (1-247). Next (248-87) is text entirely in German covering the concepts of Judaism, for example, Gottesverehrung (admiration of God), Lehre von Sinai (doctrine from Sinai), Die zehn Worte (ten commandments), die Grundlehren des Judenthums (basic teachings of Judaism), die Freundlichkeit Gottes (the friendliness of God), etc. Next are the prayers for festivals, Shabbat Minhah, Purim, and Tishah be-Av, Birkat ha-Mazon, concluding with a variety of prayers for the home in German and an appendix with prayers omitted from the text.

The part of this prayer book that reads from left to right has two German title pages and comprises the Torah readings in German for Shabbat and festivals, and blessings for special occasions, such as bei eienr beschneidung im hause (circumcision), Schlussgebet (upon retiring for the night), and a series of sermons for funeral occasions. The Hebrew is in square vocalized letters, the German in Fraktur (gothic letters). The inner endpaper of the first part has an owner’s signature, in French, which reads Mme. Achille Weill, Chambre 93).

Moses Praeger (d. 1861) was Stadt-Rabbiner in Mannheim. He introduced a Reform service (1856) there in 1856.
