Homily on Talmudic statement concerning judgment on Rosh HaShanah by R. Isaac ben Aaron Aryeh Mayer. The title page has a decorative frame and, at the top of the page, an escutcheon, a cow by a tree within a shield. The text states at the top that it is shelah manot shlah-manot (Purim present), perhaps printed to be sent on Purim, although the subject matter does not deal with that festival. The title page, as is the rest of this work, is printed in blue ink. Its test states that it is Derashot ha-Rim, delivered publicly by the author in the great synagogue in Rozniatow, Galicia in 1898 and given to be printed in Vienna, Austria in 1919 by the youth, Isaac ben Aaron Aryeh. Below, in larger Roman letters is the author’s name, Isak Mayer, Rabbiner Rozniatow and an address, Wien II, Obere Donaustrasse 10, Thur 5. The printer and a like address follows.
The text, in a single column in square unvocalized Hebrew, begins by quoting tractate Rosh HaShanah 15b, that three books are opened on Rosh HaShanah. R. Isaac continues that in this saying there are many difficulties that, if one looks at them closely, are difficult to resolve. The subject matter of R. Isaac’s discourse is the enumeration of those difficulties and their resolution. In doing so he quotes earlier rabbinic sages who have addressed this question, for example, Ramban (Nahmanides). This is a learned discourse by a person who was obviously a scholar. |
