Detailed Description |
|
Mendelssohn was sharply conscious of living in the Exile and being a man without a homeland. From the 1770s, Mendelssohn became actively involved in the struggle for the protection and the civil rights of the Jews. He willingly replied to anyone who came to him for counsel or guidance, endeavoring to assist within the limits of his means any Jew who had been overtaken by misfortune or became embroiled with the authorities. He also came to the aid of Jewish communities involved in conflicts with the authorities, taking advantage of his recognized status in order to request help from various renowned personalities whom he had befriended. This work is for Jewish emancipation and legislation in France during the period of the French Revolution. |
