Detailed
Description
On the subject of the permissibility of new produce by R. David Alexander ben Noah mi-Lisa. The title page, in a decorative frame, states that it is an explanation of the different positions of those who prohibit and those who permit hadash (new produce) in these times, that is, contemporary times. It is brings the general and detailed, with many weighty discussions from the Talmud and the poskim (decisors) related to the halakhah in Orah Hayyim. It describes R. David Alexander as the author of Toledot Noah, from לובראנץ in Poland. The title page is dated מזבח חדש בציון יכין (617=1857). On the verso of the title page is an approbation from R. Gedaliah Tiktin of Breslau (misdated 1859). There is an introduction and a long preface. The former concludes with the date that the work was completed, given as a gematria of the author’s name. The preface provides the positions of tannaim on the subject. The text is divided into five parts, each subdivided into chapters, which are followed by a she’elah and then errata. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type.

The basis of the subject matter, Hadash, is the Bible (Lev. 23:9ff.), which prescribes that “when you enter the land which I am giving to you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the first sheaf of your harvest to the priest... the priest shall wave it on the day after the sabbath.” After the waving, a burnt offering together with a meal offering and a libation were made at the altar and after that had been done it was permissible to eat of the new harvest: “Until that very day, until you have brought the offering of your God, you shall eat no bread or parched grain or fresh ears.”
