Description		    Only edition of four works by R. Jacob ben Gershom, ha-Gozer and his son R. Gershom ha-Gozer, early Talmudic sages who flourished in the Middle ages, brought to press by Jacob ben Mordecai Glassberg. The title page informs that the manuscripts were in various libraries and have never been printed previously. Many subjects and halakhot from early sages are included in this work. Printed with it is Ba’er Ya’akov, a bibliography and extended notes (Schrifttums vielfach erweiternden Anmerkungen) from the Bible, Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds, and a many midrashim, as well as halakhot from rishonim and ahronim, assembled by Glassberg. The verso of the title page has the caution against misunderstanding words such as akum and nocri as referring to modern gentiles. There is a German title page that details the contents, a dedication to Dr. Ungerleider, Rabbiner der jüdischen Gemeinde zu Berlin, a preface from Glassberg, and an introduction from R. Joel ha-Kohen Miller. Each part of the work has its own title page, each giving the place of printing as Cracow. The parts are on the laws of.Milah (1-106); two on milah, peri’ah, and gerim (107-43); three on various related subjects (144-284); and four dinim and pilpulim on related subjects (285-304). At the end are an index of the contents and addenda and corrections.

R. Jacob ben Gershom, ha-Gozer and his son R. Gershom ha-Gozer, were German Talmudists who flourished in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The former was a grand-nephew, and probably pupil, of R. Ephraim ben Jacob of Bonn. Like his father, Jacob ben Gershon ha-Gozer, he was a mohel, continuing the work, begun by the latter, of collecting the regulations and customs relating to circumcision. His work Kelale ha-Milah (part I above), rules for circumcision, describing in detail the process of the rite according to the Talmud and the works of the Geonim and the later halakists; it contains also notes on the liturgy of the day. Gershon’s book also contains many notes on remedies, and is therefore of interest to students of Jewish folk-lore. Kohn (Mardochai ben Hillel, p. 119) shows that Gershon is quoted in Mordecai under the abbreviation נ"ה = Gershon ha-Mohel, which the editors have changed to ה"נ = Halakot Gedolot.
