Description

Ethical work by R. Jonathan ben Jacob, concerning customs relating to prayer, moral sayings, and asceticism. It is based on such works as Sefer Hasidim and the Shenei Luhot ha-Berit. The title page has a frame comprised of double rows of florets. Its text states that it is Keset Yehonatan, that he (R. Jonathan) gathered as those who glean after the gleaners בליקוטי בתר ליקוטי (Ta’anit 6b, Bava Batra 21b) from many books mentioned in the introduction. He informs that he was taken captive from Ofen, to be redeemed in Nikolsburg. The title page, which is undated and does not mention the place of printing, concludes that printing was at the press established by Shabbetai Meshorer of Prague. The introduction is lacking, apparently never having been printed. The verso of the title page has approbations from R. David ben Abraham Oppenheim (Oppenheimer, 1664–1736) dated Nikolsburg, 11 Sivan [5]457 (Friday, May 31, 1697), and R. Abraham Naphtali Hirsch Levi ben Moses Spitz Segal (c. 1628-1712) dated Nikolsburg, 25 Sivan [5]457 (Friday 14 June, 1697). It is from the second approbation that we know which works R. Jonathan used in preparing Keset Yehonatan. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words which are in square letters. Keset Yehonatan includes the famous account of what occurred on the festival of Shevu’ot, according to R. Solomon Alkabetz (1505-84) concerning R. Joseph Caro. Keset Yehonatan concludes with the perek shira said by all wild beasts, animals, birds, trees, grasses, and crawling things.

R. Jonathan ben Jacob (17th century) was one of the leaders of the community of Ofen (Buda), according to R. David Oppenheim. When the imperial troops of Leopold I (Austria) took the city from the Turks R. Jonathan was taken captive, but was redeemed by the Jews of Nikolsburg. For a time he resided in the home of R. Simhah Ephraim ben Gershon ha-Kohen Freudemann in Belgrade, to whom he refers in this work. R. Jonathan was also the author of a book of popular tales in Yiddish, Neu Maaseh Buch (Dyrhenfurth, 1697), and was the editor of Menahem Azariah di Fano’s Ma’amar ha-Ittim. (Dyrhenfurth, 1693).

דף יח-יט,א: "ולהראות... מעלת זאת הלילה של חג השבועות... מעשה שאירע קרוב לזמנינו והועתק מכתב... ר' שלמה אלקבץ שהיה מתחבר בכת של רבינו יוסף [קארו]... וזה נוסח הכתב...". נדפס תחילה בספר מגיד מישרים לר' יוסף קארו, חלק א, לובלין ת"ו. דף יט-כ: פרק שירה. ההקדמה הנז' בשער לא נדפסה. שמות הספרים שמהם ליקט המחבר נזכרים בהסכמה שנייה. הופיעה הוצאה אחרת, בשינויים ובהשמטת שמות פועלי הדפוס הנזכרים כאן בסוף הספר (יוסף בן יצחק בן ישעי' מק"ק וואיידסלב, יצחק בן שלמה זלמן מק"ק לאטן באך ממדינת הגר ומשה ב"ר פנחס "שוחט דמתא דק"ק פראג ממשפחת טויסק").
