Detailed
Description
On vegetarianism, or, according to the subtitle, the laws of vegetarianism, according to the laws of religion and according to intelligence, tradition and to ethics הדת והדעת, המסורה והמוסר by R. Isaac Hebenstreit. The title page, which is printed in blue ink, has a decorative frame, and at the top the verse, “And he called the name of that place Kibroth-Hattaavah; because there they buried the people who had the craving” (Numbers 11:34). Below it is a vignette of a shepherd surrounded by a lion, cow, and lambs, beneath it peace at the end of days. It references Isaiah 11:6-7, “The wolf also shall live with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.” R. Hebenstreit is described as a pioneer in the vegetarian movement.

There is a second identical title page in black; on the verso of that page is an announcement about related work and approbations that will come in later works, a warning against unauthorized reprinting, and the title and author in Latin letters. There is an introduction from R. Hebenstreit followed by the text, which is in ten chapters. Each chapter begins with a biblical quote, which is then expounded upon by R. Hebenstreit. There are occasional accompanying footnotes. Kiwroth Hatawah is bound in a blue softcover with the title stamped in gold. It is an interesting early document, from a Jewish religious perspective, on vegetarianism.
