Description		    Translation and commentaries on the book of Job by Dr. Israel Schwarz. The book is in two parts the first a translation and commentary of Job by Dr. Schwarz, and classical commentaries by R. Isaiah di Trani, R. Moses and R. Joseph Kimhi, and R. Zerahiah b. Israel of Barcelona. Each part has its own half-title page. The book has two title pages, one in German, the second in Hebrew. They both inform that the first part has the contents noted above, the second part has the Arabic commentary of Rav Saadiah Gaon and R. Moses Gikatilia (the last two from a manuscript in Oxford), concluding with explanatory notes. There is an introduction by Dr. Schwarz and then the book of Job, the Hebrew vocalized text on the right, Dr. Schwarz’s translation on the left. Next is his commentary, Mekor Yisrael, followed by the other commentaries, set in a single column in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words.

Dr. Israel ben Hayyim Schwarz (1830- 1875) was a German rabbi; born at Hürben, Bavaria. He was educated by his father, R. Joachim Schwarz of Hürben. At the age of eighteen he passed the state examination for Bavarian rabbis, and was then elected district rabbi of Bayreuth, where he remained until 1856, when he was called to the rabbinate of Cologne. R. Schwarz was an ardent supporter of the Alliance Israélite Universelle, and founded several local branches of that society. His works, in addition to Tikvat Enosch, include a translation of a geography of Palestine, written in Hebrew by Joseph Schwarz.
