Detailed
Description
A treatise on rhetoric by R. Moses Hayyim Luzzatto (Ramhal, 1707-46). Leshon Limmudim, was written when Ramhal was only a teenager. According to Waxman it “showed not only a mastery of rhetoric and the theory of style, but displayed the first flights of a poetic genius . . .” The title page has a decorative frame and states that it is dedicated to R. Isaiah Bassan. There is an introduction from R. Ginsburg, who brought the book to press. In Leshon Limmudim Ramhal makes use of his extensive knowledge of classical and contemporary Italian literature. It is divided into eleven limmudim (lectures or lessons). The first devoted to a definition of rhetorical composition, defined as the manner by which one arranges his words, whether oral or written, in a pleasant manner. The second defines pleasantness, which contrasts with the ordinary or commonplace. The body of Leshon Limmudim is made up of seven lessons that expand upon these principles, asddressing such subjects as the parts of a composition, forms of sentences, and figures of speech. All elucidated by numerous examples and copious quotations drawn from the Bible, including the manner in which speech was used prophets. At the end are errata. The final end paper has an owner’s signature. Attractively printed on good paper.
