This work was published by the author’s grandchild, R. Shneur Zalman, son of R. Menahem Mendel, one of the leading figures in the Chabad community of Hebron, with financial support from Sir Abdullah Sassoon and brothers, in honor of their father David Sassoon. In the publisher’s preface, there is an extensive report on his task as emissary in foreign countries for the Kollel Chabad organization, and of his meetings with the members of the Sassoon family, which eventually lead to the printing of this work. Also in the preface, he extends gratitude to R. Nathan Adler of London [chief rabbi of the United Kingdom] and to Sir Moses Montefiore. Aside from the large illustrations of the Temple site, Jerusalem, and Cave of the Patriarchs adorning the volume, there are many decorative motifs in the Bak Press style.

הספר יצא לאור ע"י נכד המחבר ר' שניאור זלמן ב"ר מנחם מענדיל שהיה מראשי קהלת חב"ד בחברון, בסיוע כספי של סיר עבדאללא ששון ואחיו, לכבוד ולעילוי נשמת אביהם דוד ששון. בהקדמת המביא לבית הדפוס הוא כותב באריכות על שליחותו למזרח כשד"ר עבור כולל חב"ד ועל פגישותיו עם בני משפחת ששון, דבר שהוביל להדפסת הספר. בהקדמה הוא גם מודה לר' נתן אדלר מלונדון (רבה הראשי של בריטניה), ולסיר משה מונטיפיורי. מלבד הציורים הגדולים של מקום המקדש העיר ירושלים ומערת המכפלה, שזורים לאורך כל הספר הרבה עיטורים אופיינים לדפוס בק.
