Detailed
Description
Two titles bound together. The first work, Arba’ah Ma’amrim, is comprised of four essays. They are Yerai ha-kahal ve-Yishpot by Alexander Zederbaum (Erez, from cedar=Zederbaum, 1816–1893), noted pioneer of Hebrew journalism; Hadashim ve gam Yeshanim by Abraham Elijah Harkavy (1835–1919), the famed orientalist, scholar of Jewish history and literature; Yesodei ha-Hinukh by Joseph Smelig; and Toldot R. Joshua ben Levi by Isaac Rahlin. The title page describes the collection as an offering at the closing of the newspaper Ha-Meliz upon the death of Zederbaum. Ha-Meliz the first Hebrew paper in Russia, was founded in Odessa in 1860 by Zederbaum. Although the paper ceased to appear for a few months after Zederbaum’s death it began to publish again after being taken over by Yehudah Leib Rabinovich, who served as its last editor. Arba’ah Ma’amrim is bound with its original wrappers. Information relating to the printer and place of publication is given at the bottom of the page in Cyrillic. The text is in a single column in square letters. Each essay has its own pagination. The front cover has a light owner’s signature, that of Pinhas Torbacaz (?). The second title is Reshimot ha-Haburim. The title page describes it as a listing of the members of the community of supporters of the children of Israel, workers of the land and craftsman in Syria and the Holy Land, until 1890. The text is comprised of a lengthy two column listing of the names and contributions. It provides an important and unusually detailed insight into the membership and support of the modern Zionist movement in an early period in its development. The title page of Reshimot ha-Haburim has the same owner’s signature as Arba’ah Ma’amrim.
