Detailed
Description
Responsa by R. Gershon ben Isaac Moses Coblenz. The title page has a decorative border with a crown at the top and bottom, and at the bottom of the page a shield with three fleur de lis topped by a crown, representative of the French monarchy. The title page states that it is the responsa of the late R. Gershon Coblenz a member of the great Bet Din of Metz. Reference is made to King Louis XVI and the title page is dated with a chronogram from, “This is the service [of the families] of the sons of Gershon” (Numbers 4:28). There is an introduction from R. Gershon (1b-3a) concluding with verse, the initial words forming an anagram of his name. Next is an introduction from his son, R. Jacob ben Gershon Jacob (3a-4a), with a woodcut at the end of the page. The text is comprised of forty six responsa, completed by R. Gershon at the age of twenty-five, as well as four responsa from R. Issachar Dov (1712–1744), who was appointed head of the yeshivah at Metz but died on the way there before being able to take up the appointment. There is a detailed index. Kiryat Hannah concludes with an approbation from the Great Bet Din of Metz, signed by R. Uri Pheibush Kohen, R. Joseph Yuzel Judah, R. Mordecai ben Libermasn Levi Ettingen, R. Asher Anshel ben Eliezer ha-Levi, R. Abraham Avrili Pikrit, R. Meir Wolf Sharveil, and R. Joseph ben Leib. At the bottom of the page, as a tail-piece, is the shield with fleur de lis. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. Kiryat Hannah is printed on clear fine paper.

R. Gershon ben Isaac Moses Coblenz (1717- first half eighteenth century) was a pupil of R. Jacob Reisher (Shevut Ya’akov) and officiated as dayyan at Metz. In addition to Kiryat Hanah, many of R. Gershom’s responsa can be found in ShevutYa’aḳov and in the Keneset Yehezkel of R. Ezekiel Katzenellenbogen. R. Gershon also wrote novellae on the Turim and corresponded on rabbinical subjects with rabbis Judah Müller, Samuel Helmann, and Jacob Joshua of Cracow.
