Description		    On the readings, laws, and customs relating to the sick, death-bed, burial, and mourning rites by R. Samuel David ben Jehiel Ottolengo. The title page has a frame made up of rows of florets, somewhat unusual in that the lower border has two rows of hands. The text states that it is the essence of Ma’avar Yabbok which was abridged by R. Ottolengo “to be frontlets between the eyes” (cf. Deuteronomy 11:18), between the rav who wrote the discourse. This reference is to R. Aaron Berechiah of Modena (d. 1639), author of Ma’avar Yabbok (Venice, 1626). The title page is dated from the verse in which the title is taken, “The city of righteousness, the faithful city (kiryati ne’emanah)” (Isaiah 1:26). The verso praises R. David Camiori who helped make possible publication of Kiryati Ne’emanah. This page is headed by a woodcut of a winged cherub and in the middle of the page is a crown. Next is Ottolengo’s introduction, followed by the approbation of R. Isaiah Nizah and R. Solomon Silva, both of Venice. Between them are three small woodcuts, the two outer with floral frames about a winged cherub, the center a basket of fruit. The text follows, in two columns. The volume ends with errata.

R. Samuel David ben Jehiel Ottolengo (d. 1718) Italian rabbi, kabbalist, and poet, was born in Casale Monferrato and studied under R. Moses Zacuto and R. Benjamin Cohen. He served as chief rabbi of Padua and later of Venice. His published works are, in addition to Kiryati Ne’emanah, Me’il Shemu’el (Venice, 1705), an abridgement and index to the Shenei Luhot ha-Berit of R. Isaiah Horowitz. He also wrote a supplement to the Tikkun Shovavim (the initial letters of the first six weekly portions of the Book of Exodus) of R. Moses Zacuto that was published (Venice, 1708) with the text. He founded a Malbish Arumim Society to assist the needy during those six weeks. Responsa, novellae, piyyutim, and kabbalistic articles by R. Ottolengo have remained in manuscript.
