Hebrew translation of Adolph Knigge’s Umgang mit Menschen (On Human Relations), by Feivel Schiffer. The original was a treatise on the fundamental principles of human relations that has the reputation of being the authoritative guide to behaviour, politeness and etiquette. The work is in fact more of a philosophical treatise on the basis of human relations than a how-to guide to etiquette. This translation begins with a half title page, followed by full German and Hebrew title pages. This is a clean copy, a small number of pages still not separated.
Feivel (Phoebus) Schiffer (c. 1810-66) was a Russian Hebraist and poet. He was born in Lasezow, government of Lublin and lived successively in Josefov, Brody, Szebrszyn, and Warsaw. He was one of the best-known of the early Maskilim of Russian Poland. He wrote: Hazerot ha-Shir, an epic poem on the life of the patriarch Jacob (Warsaw, 1840); Matta Leshem, a treatise on agriculture and life in the country (ib. 1843); Devar Geburot, a biography of Prince Paskewitsch (ib. 1845); and Toledot Napoleon, in two parts (ib. 1849 and 1857).
Adolph Franz Friedrich Ludwig Freiherr Knigge (October 16, 1752 - May 6, 1796) was a German writer and Freemason. He co-founded the Illuminati together with Adam Weishaupt. He was born in Bredenbeck, Hanover and was allegedly initiated into Freemasonry in 1772 in Kassel. In Germany, Knigge is best remembered for his Ueber den Umgang mit Menschen, so that the German term Knigge has come to mean good manners. He died in Bremmen.
