Description		    R. Ephraim Moses b. Alexander Susskind Pinner (c. 1800–1880), was born in Pinne (district of Poznan), R. Pinner studied Talmud under R. Jacob of Lissa. In 1831 he compiled an abbreviated form of the Talmud, Kizzur Talmud Yerushalmi ve-Talmud Bavli. Pinner is best known for his ambitious scheme to translate into German the whole of the Talmud; he enlisted the moral support of some prominent rabbis, including R. Moses Sofer (Schreiber) of Pressburg, who eventually withdrew his name. It appears that Pinner maintained that R. Nathan Marcus Adler of Hanover (later of London) had undertaken to translate the difficult tractates Eruvin and Yevamot under this scheme, but Adler denied the existence of such an arrangement. In 1842 Berakhot was published in Hebrew with German translation. Czar Nicholas I lent his name to the project, together with other notables. The volume was dedicated to the czar, who had shown an unusual interest in the translation of the Talmud before R. Pinner's venture - and not with the best of intentions. No further volume appeared.
          
Paragraph 2    עם שער נוסף והקדמה בגרמנית. הרב ד"ר פינר רצה לתרגם את כל התלמוד לגרמנית, גם בשביל היהודים וגם בשביל הגויים נגד האנטישמיות. אמנם למעשה לא הצליח להדפיס אלא מסכת ברכות בלבד. זהו למעשה נסיון ראשון של תרגום התלמוד ללועזית ע"י יהודי, שכאמור לא צלח. בהקדמה כותב המתרגם שהוא תלמידו של ר' יעקב מליסא (בעל המחבר ספר חוות דעת ונתיבות המשפט), ובסוף המסכת הדפיס חידושים ממנו. המהדיר קבל הרבה הסכמות מרבנים חשובים, ואף ר' משה סופר ה"חתם סופר" נתן לו הסכמה. אולם אח"כ (עדיין לפני ההדפסה) חזר בו החתם סופר ופרסם כרוז מיוחד בו הוא כותב "הודיתי ולא בושתי לומר בוש אני על כי בעונותי טחו עיני מראות", אמנם הוא כותב שחוץ מענין תרגום התלמוד לא מצא בו עול. המתרגם הצליח לעניין בדבר גם הרבה ממנהיגי אומות העולם והקיסר הרוסי ניקולאי (הראשון) נתן את חסותו להדפסה, ובתחילת הספר יש עמוד שלם הקדשה לצאר ניקולאי. עם פרונומרנטן ובהם גם מלכים, נסיכים ודוכסים, ביניהם: קיסר רוסיה שקנה 100 עותקים, מלך הולנד שקנה חמשה עותקים, מלך בלגיה, מלך דנמרק ועוד.
