Detailed
Description
In 1854 Isaac Mayer Wise founded The Israelite in Cincinnati (after 1874 The American Israelite), which one year later added a German-language supplement called Deborah. The most important German Jewish publication of its time, Deborah appeared until 1903, first as a weekly and subsequently as a monthly. The shifting nature of its contents during this period can be read in the changing subtitle on its masthead: originally Gewidmet den Toechtern Israels ("Dedicated to the Daughters of Israel"), it next became Juedisch-Amerikanische Familien Zeitung ("Jewish American Family Paper"), then Allgemeine Zeitung des amerikanischen Judentums ("General Newspaper of American Jewry"), and finally Eine deutsch-amerikanische Monatsschrift zur Foerderung juedischer Interessen in Gemeinde, Schule und Haus ("A German-American Monthly Magazine for the Advancement of Jewish Interests in the Community, School and Home").
