Description		    Only edition of the commentary on aggadot in the Ein Ya’akov of R. Jacob ibn Habib by R. Shimon Wolf ben Jacob of Pintshov. The title page has the famed Benveniste fame with Benveniste’s escutcheon at the top. Within the frame the text is headed at the peak of the arch with the verse, “This is the gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter” (Psalms 118:20). The title page is dated from the verse, “The glory of this latter house shall be greater [than that of the former]” (Haggai 2:9). The author’s name does not appear on the title page. However, it is alluded to in the beginning of the introduction, which starts on the verso of the title page, from the enlarged initial letters. This volume, as the title page informs, is on part one of Ein Ya’akov. It covers tractates Berakhot through Hagigah. At the end of the volume is the colophon, in which the wish to publish other volumes from this commentary is expressed, a wish that, unfortunately, was not realized. However, another work from R. Shimon Wolf ben Jacob of Pintshov, Kevod Hakhamim, on aggadot in the Jerusalem Talmud, had been printed earlier, in 1703, also by Thomas Rose. The text is in two columns in rabbinic letters excepting headers and initial words, which are in square letters.

The Benveniste frame employed here is the architectural border with his printer’s mark in a crest at the top. It is comprised of an upright lion facing inward towards a tower; a star is above the lion and the tower. This frame with the crest was copied by other printers n several locations. The first printing house to make use of Benveniste’s mark outside of Amsterdam was that of Thomas Rose, a Christian printer of Hebrew books in Hamburg from 1686-1709. Rose was joined by his son Johann, who printed Hebrew titles together with his father in 1709, and afterwards separately in 1711, and from 1715 to 1721. Among the titles printed by Thomas Rose that employ the Benveniste mark are Abrabanel on the Early Prophets (1686), Siftei Kohen (1690), Divrei Hokhamim (1692-93), and Koved Hokhamim (1703).

בלא הפנים. שם המחבר מרומז בראש הקדמתו, בראשי התיבות. בסופה חותם שמו: שועל בן אר"י דיינא זצ"ל. קולופון: "ויה"ר שאזכה במהרה להוציא לאור גם חלק האחרון", ולא נדפס. מקום ושם הדפוס על-פי ספרו כבוד חכמים, שצורת השער והאותיות זהים.
