R. Raphael b. Mordecai Ankawa (Raphael ha-Malakh, 1848–1935), rabbi, kabbalist, and scholar. Born in Sale, R. Raphael went on to become Chief Rabbi of Morocco. He was greatly respected by his contemporaries, and his decisions, as well as his memory, remains a source of inspiration to Moroccan rabbis. Many wonderful stories are told about the miracles and assistance he offered to his Jewish brethen in Morocco.
His tomb in the Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of Sale is an important place of pilgrimage for Jews and non-Jews. Sometimes more than 10,000 people from many parts of the world convened there on Lag ba-Omer to pray at his gravesite. |
