The Swiss Heinrich Zschokke (1771-1848) was a multitalented person. Among his accomplishments are being a prolific writer, statesman and educator. While his stories are not known for their originality, his lucid and enthusiastic style, and modern ideas on politics and religion, made him a popular author. He and his wife, Nanny Nüsperli (1785-1858, had 13 children and 40 grand-children The second work, Ha-Yehudim, is a drama by EphraimYedidah (Gotthold) Lessing (1729–1781). It too was written in German and translated into Hebrew, in this case by Jacob Shimon ha-Kohen. Lessing, a German dramatist, philosopher, and critic was one of the outstanding representatives of the Enlightenment in Germany. His most famous work is Nathan der Weise, inspired by Moses Mendelssohn.
