Description		    First edition of the medical aphorisms from R. Moses ben Maimon (Maimonides, Rambam). Maimonides wrote ten medical works, of which one of the most important is Pirkei Moshe (Aphorisms of Moshe). Maimonides’ whole concept of medicine is based on the conviction that a healthy body is the prerequisite for a healthy soul. This enables a man to develop his intellectual and moral capabilities and leads him toward the knowledge of G-d and thus to a more ethical life. He regards healing as the art of repairing both the defects of the body and the turmoil of the mind. A physician must therefore have not only the technical knowledge of his profession, but also the intuition and skill to understand the patient's personality and environment. The title page is followed by approbations, Maimonides introduction, and the text, which is divided into twenty ma’amrim and set in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. The title page is dated 1804 but Steinschneider says it was back dated because of the censors and the correct date is 1834. The name of press was forged for similar reasons.

Maimonides many attributes include his being a practicing physician. While in Fez, Morocco, Maimonides learned medicine from Arabic sources. By the time his family settled in Cairo his reputation as a great physician was growing. He was appointed Court Physician to Al Malik Al Afdal Saladin, the Vizier of Egypt. Maimonides held many controversial views on the basic premises of medicine, some of which are still being debated today. He believed that the mind had a direct affect on the body and that the body could not be healed if the mind did not agree with the curative process. This was a revolutionary concept at that time. During the time he worked in Cairo, Maimonides authored twelve health treatises in Arabic, contributing much to the knowledge of medical science at the time. Included among his brilliant monographs were commentaries on asthma, hemorrhoids, hypochondria, poisons, and the concept of healing as an art. He also compiled the first organized glossary of medicinal drugs.

מתוך הקדמת הרמב"ם: הפרקים אשר יכללם חבורי זה... לקטתים מדברי גאלינוס מכל ספריו... חלקתי הפרקי' האלה למספר... כה מאמרים. בשער: Gedruckt bei Jides Rosanes 1804. זהו אחד הספרים שיוחסו בזיוף לדפוס יהודית ראזאניש. עיין: אברהם יערי, בית דפוסה של הרבנית יהודית ראזאניש בלבוב - קרית ספר, יז, ת"ש, עמ' 108, מס' 48; מחקרי ספר, ירושלים תשי"ח, עמ' 267, מס' 17. לדעתו נדפסו הספרים הללו בשנות תק"ץ-תר"י. לדעתו של שמואל ווינער נדפס הספר שלפנינו בשנת תקצ"ד לערך. עיין: קהלת משה, עמ' 381, מס' 3220. גם אברהם גייגר (מלא חפנים, בערלין ת"ר, החלק הגרמני, עמ' 74), צדנר (עמ' 579), רוזנטל (יודע ספר, עמ' 237, מס' 1679) ורוסט (עמ' 858) קובעים את שנת הדפוס: 1834. ואילו שטיינשניידר (.C.B, עמ' 1926) רושם שנת הדפוס: תקצ"ה. לדעתו ניתנה באותה שנה הסכמתו של ר' אלעזר לאנדא ובטעות הובלטו האותיות ק מ בפרט "פרקי משה". רוסט רושם שנת ההסכמה תק"ץ (הוא מקטין גם את האות ה). אך באותה שנה חל כג אדר ביום ה ולא ביום ג. המאמר האחרון (כה) אינו שלם. וסיומו נתפרסם מכתב-יד על-ידי שניאור זקש בהתחיה, א, תר"י, עמ' 38-35, בתוספת הערות. עי': זקש, שניאור בן צמח. מהדורה שלמה של "פרקי משה" על-פי כתבי-יד יצאה על-ידי זיסמן' מונטנר, ירושלים תשי"ט. מאמר כה הובא שם בתרגום נוסף של ר' זרחיה בן יצחק בן שאלתיאל חן (גראציאן). עי' למעלה: כתבים רפואיים. תשי"ז-תשכ"ט. כרך ב. הסכמות: ר' אלעזר לאנדא, יום ג, כג אדר פ'ר'ק'י' מ'ש'ה' לפרט [תשל"ה!]; ר' ראובן בן מוהרר"י [ר' יוסף] אב"ד אדעסי.
