Commentary on the first ma’amar in the Tikkunei Zohar which begins פתח אליהו by R. Menahem Mendel of Lubavich. This volume of Penei Moshe does not appear in the on-line catalogue of Lubavich or other major libraries. The title page informs that it deals with that part of Tikkunei Zohar which is customarily recited by Hasidim and other pious individuals prior to morning prayers, erev Shabbat, and alot ha-minhah. It is based on the profundities of the Sefirot and hakhmas ha-Kabbalah. Penei Moshe has been assembled from a manuscript of R. Menahem Mendel Schneersohn and the works of R. Shneur Zalman of Lyady, and R. Dov Baer. The text is divided into twenty ma’amarim, has an addenda on פתח אליהו and concludes with errata. The editor was R. Moses ben Jacob Lieberman. Bound with Penei Moshe is Hesed le-Avraham (Warsaw, 1883).
R. Menahem Mendel of Lubavich (1789–1866), grandson of R. Shneur Zalman and son-in-law of R. Dov Baer, became the leader of Habad after his father-in-law’s death. Orphaned while young, he was educated chiefly by his grandfather, and from a very early age began to write on halakhah and Hasidism. He wrote numerous books and sermons, most of which remained in manuscript. He was generally acknowledged as one of the greatest Torah scholars of his day. His responsa Zemah Zedek (1870–74, in honor of which he is referred to as the "Zemah Zedek") is a highly esteemed halakhic work. Menahem Mendel greatly assisted the Habad settlers in Hebron. The Russian government accorded him the hereditary title of an honored citizen, and he was acknowledged as one of the leaders of Russian Jewry. He fought the assimilationist policy of the government and the adherents of Haskalah who gave it their support |
