Verse related to prayer by David Mark. The title page is straightforward, stating the title, author, date (Hodesh Shevat [5]576 = between Wednesday January 31, 1816 and Thursday, February 29, 1816). The place of printing and printer are absent. There is a dedication to R. Joseph Oppenheim and R. Aharon Mai and an introduction (5-8) from the author. The introduction begins with a statement of purpose, to spread the truth of faith and the Torah ethics that emanate from it, and that the value of prayer should be established in the heart of a person his entire life. He writes that Intelligence concurs with this, for it is the purpose of prayer, and the completeness and good of the soul. We possess excellent prayers and salvation that are not false in Psalms. It is not necessary to inform those of understanding that the Holy principles in them are difficult and the simple meaning as well. Mark writes that for sometime he has asked who is a man of faith and understanding that will write an introduction to enable one understand our holy prayers? When he saw that no one took it upon himself Mark put his faith in G-d and took the task upon himself.

The verse is comprised of Yesodei ha-Emunah (1-3), Da’at ve-ye-Ra’at HaShem (4-6), Pe-ulot ha-Tefilah (7-10), Maskil le-ha-Kir (11-13), Maskil le-Hagot (14-15), Mizmor le-Hagot (16-17), Zadok ha-Din (18-21), ha-She’aret ha-Nefesh (22-23), ha-Bitachon (24-26), Mizmor Shir (27-29), Tefillah (lpi tunazon ha-Angli (30), Maskil le-he-Teiv (31-38), and Maskil le-Hag ha-Shevu’ot (38-46). The title page has the stamp of Jews College London. The lack of the place of printing has resulted in bibliographies assigning Shire Tefilah to different locations, for example, the JNUL Bibliographic project lists it as a Rodelheim imprint, Vinograd assigns it to Berlin. |
