Detailed
Description
Pinhas Litvinovsky (1894–1985), Israel painter. He was born in Novo-Georgiyevsk, Ukraine. In 1912 he was persuaded by Boris Schatz, who was visiting with a Bezalel exhibition, to go to Erez Israel. He began to study at the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem, but was disappointed and returned to Russia to study at the St. Petersburg Academy. In 1919 he returned to Jerusalem. He participated in the first group exhibitions of Palestinian artists in Jerusalem from 1923 and in Tel Aviv from 1926. A sure draftsman, he makes brilliant use of color and form, often juggling several styles to recreate a traditional Jewish theme. Though he is best known for his portraits, his group pictures, such as "The Market Place" (in the Tel Aviv Museum), show traces of cubism in the almost plastic quality of the figures. He was awarded the Israel Prize in 1980.
