Description		    Introduction to the Hebrew Language by Philip Levi. The text is in English with Hebrew examples. The title page has a Hebrew heading and then states in English that it is A Compendium of Hebrew Grammar, Compos’d for the Beginners, by Philip Levi a converted Jew, and that it was printed in Oxford at the theater. There is an attractive woodcut, presumably of the theater. The verso has the imprimatur, Guil. Delaune, Vice.-Can. Oxford. There is a dedication from Levi to Dr. Delaune, vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford. The Compendium is in two parts. Part one has twenty-eight chapters, beginning with the alphabet, and concluding with the mutation of vowels by reason of the accents. This part has numerous examples of conjugations and detailed explanations. Part two has nine chapters and covers syntax or construction, and includes verbs and nouns. There is an appendix which contains “so much of the Chaldee Grammar as is necessary to understand those parts of Scripture which are Writt in that Language.” A fold out chart (179) shows the paradigm of the Verb. The final page is errata.

Although the Oxford (Clarendon) press has a long and illustrious history few Hebrew books were printed there in its early years. The first Hebrew book printed at Oxford appears to have been an edition of the Mishnah, with a Latin version by Samuel Clarke, in 1667. The next was a part of Maimonides' Mishneh Torah, with translation and notes by H. Prideaux, in 1679. Hyde’s Hebrew treatises on chess were also produced in Oxford, in 1694, and Clavering’s Talmud Torah - a text and translation of Maimonides' Yad - in 1705, all by the Clarendon Press. A Compendium of Hebrew Grammar is one of the few early Oxford Hebrew imprints.
