Salomone Fiorentino (1743–1815), Italian poet. Fiorentino was born at Monte San Savino, Tuscany. He became so celebrated that Grand Duke Ferdinand III appointed him court poet. When the French revolutionary forces invaded Italy, he fell under suspicion and was arrested. After his release from prison he lived in Florence, where he dealt in cloth until he was invited to teach Italian literature in the Jewish academy in Leghorn, where he remained until 1808. His collected poems were published more than once. His most important work is his Elegie (1801) composed on the occasion of his wife's death. His verses were highly appreciated for their deep religious feeling. |
