R. Gabriel Zev b. Jehiel Isaac Margolis (1848-1935, Rav Velvele), was among the leading Orthodox rabbis in the United States. He came to the United States in 1907 at the age of 59, after having previously served as rabbi of Grodno for twenty-seven years. He was the son-in-law of R. Nahum of Grodno, who was the spiritual mentor of R. Israel Meir ha-Kohen Kagan, popularly known as the Hafetz Hayyim. Rav Velvele was invited by the Boston community to serve as spiritual leader of several congregations in Boston. He accepted the invitation and arrived in Boston in 1907, remaining there until 1911, at which time he was invited by Adas Yisroel on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to serve as their rabbi, also known as United Hebrew Community of New York, where he served until his passing. An erudite scholar he is the author of many works.
