Detailed
Description
Unusual beautiful edition of Psalms written and illustrated by hand by Morris Weinberg (Moshe Vainberg) and photo-mechanically reproduced. The first title page has a decorative border and depicts a hand writing the scribes name. it is followed by the approbations for the book and then a full page photo of the author hoding a copy of Tehilim: Ketivat Yad. A second title page has a depiction of the United States flag (with 46 stars) and in English, This Book the Book of Psalms of King David written by hand by Morris Weinberg, 1912, Chicago, Illinois. There is a word to the reader, a preamble to be said prior to saying Psalms, and then the text. Psalms are written in a clear square vocalized Hebrew with accompanying marginal occasionally larger illustrations. The illustrations are often appropriate to the text. For example, “you have broken the teeth of the wicked” (Psalms 3:8) is accompanied by teeth; “I am weary with my moaning; all night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears” (6:7) by a bed and at the end of that chapter by a saber and bayonet. “Who shall abide in your tent?” (15:1) is preceded by a page wide drawing of a synagogue. Psalms that do not have accompanying illustrations have their initial words in decorative borders, often with attractive arrangements at the side. For example, at the side of frame about the first words of Psalm 36 are shoshanas (lilies); by the frame of Psalm 38, which begins , “A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance. O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger; nor chasten me in your wrath” is a cannon. Within the volume are small depictions of clocks, flags, chests, animals, and between Psalms 104 and 105 a page wide steam ship within an oval formed by a fish. After Psalm 74 is a full page Shevissi. Before Psalm 90 is a title page that says it is Sefer Tehilot Moshe and names a sponsor for the work, Zalman Kohen Gadol. At the end of the volume are prayers to be said for the ill and a page to enter the names of parents. Several pages have been printed twice, so that the physical enumeration is incorrect. Tehilim: Ketivat Yad is a munificent edition of the book of Psalms.
