Detail Description

Novellae, discourses, and responsa by R. Benjamin ben Samuel. Included are novellae from R. Menaham Mann. The title page, which has a decorative frame and a vignette of the Western Wall, is dated, “for from Zion shall go forth Torah” (Isaiah 2:3, Micah 4:2). It informs that R. Benjamin was from Minsk. On the verso of the title page is an approbation from R. Abraham Ashkenazi, Rishon le-Zion and R. Meir ben Isaac Izik [Aeurbach]. There is a lengthy introduction from the author and then the text, which is set in a single column in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words which are in square letters.

The novellae are on tractates Shabbat (1a-20b); Gittin (1a-13a); Kiddushin (13a-15b). There is an addenda and a Hadran on Mishnayot (16a-18b); then novellae from R. Mann on Berakhot and several tractates in Mo’ed and on Hallel (19a-27a). At the end of this section is a large vignette with the verse “for from Zion shall go forth Torah.” The next part of She'arit Binyamin has a separate title page and is entitled Helek ha-Derash. The discourses are on Rosh HaShanah, Shabbat Teshuvah, Yim Kippur, Parshat Shekalim, Parshat ha-Hodesh, and Shabbat ha-Gadol. The volumne concludes with a responsum from R. Isaac Elhanan Spector av bet din Kovno concerning someone who went out as an emissary and drowned in the river, and whose body was subsequently recovered. Part one was printed in Lyck in 1863.
